Marine energy options research

13 May 2014

Jersey is to benefit from a University of Exeter student research project that will look at renewable energy opportunities around the Island.

Dr Peter Connor and a team of students from the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences at Exeter are in the Island this week carrying out an assessment of the potential for marine renewable energy in Jersey waters.

Dr Connor is a senior lecturer in renewable energy policy and teaches in the area of national renewable energy policy and regulation. He has recently been involved in a number of projects on renewable energy for the European Community.

A previous group of students have worked closely with Guernsey to assess the potential for renewable energy onshore and offshore and Dr Connor’s group are keen to look at the situation in Jersey.

They will look at technical issues such as current use of resources and how new technology might connect to the grid as well as talking to local people to find out what they think about any future development in Jersey’s waters.

Director for Environmental Policy, Department of the Environment, Dr Louise Magris said “We’re delighted that Dr Connor has chosen to lead a research project here and I hope that the final outputs of the student-led work will provide us with very useful information in respect of our offshore renewable energy resources.”
