Work to remove trees along the Avenue Le Bas in Rue des Pres trading estate will start on Monday 3 February.
The 33 poplar trees in the estate are causing considerable damage to the footpaths and road surface, causing safety concerns for pedestrians and road users. The roots have also caused damage to walls and surfaces within private property.
As the trees are only half grown they will continue to expand in girth, height and spread their root systems causing further damage to drains and structures.
Following discussions with a tree specialist Transport and Technical Services (TTS) will replace the Poplars trees with a different species. The 33 trees will be replaced by 60 new trees around the trading estate to enhance the environment and encourage wildlife.
JPH obtained planning approval to remove the avenue of trees, that were previously protected, and to plant additional trees.
The trees will be cut down and the root system treated poisoned to stop the roots from developing new saplings.
The tree felling will take two weeks, during which time one side of Avenue Le Bas will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians.
Parking will be temporarily removed from both sides of the avenue to allow trees to be felled on one side of the road and the other side to be used as a two way road, maintaining access and egress into the estate. The arrangement will be reversed for the second week.
Preparations for replanting will begin in June and involve minor kerb line changes, tree stump removal and new tree pits dug ready for new trees to be planted in October 2014. Further notification will be sent out nearer the time.
