The Department of the Environment is reminding fishermen that the setting of ground lines and individual hooks (‘trots’) on Island beaches is not allowed from midnight on Monday 31 March until Thursday 16 October.
Owners of ground lines and hooks must remove them in their entirety from the beach. This should be done before 1 April. The custom of removing the hooks and leaving the lines in place until the start of the next season is dangerous to other beach users and to the environment.
Marine Resources officers will be carrying out inspections to ensure all ground lines have been removed.
