People are being warned not to put unsuitable items in their bins or in loads taken for disposal as it's damaging Jersey's energy from waste plant.
Over the last few months, items have been sent to the plant which are unsuitable for incineration, pose risks for staff and can cause costly damage to equipment.
The unsuitable items include:
- bikes
- patio furniture
- BBQs
- large amounts of glass (which should be recycled)
- commercial fishing gear
- commercial vehicle waste parts
- sections of steel or steel pipe
The Transport and Technical Services Department (TTS) has contacted customers who collect and deliver waste, including the parishes, and asked them to refuse to collect items that can't be incinerated. TTS will also carry out random checks on loads as they arrive.
If staff find unacceptable waste, customers will either have to take it away again to sort and dispose of themselves, or pay a relevant ‘mixed waste’ charge.
Important people use the correct way of disposing
Assistant Director of Solid Waste for TTS, Richard Fauvel, said “We have ways of disposing of all types of waste, but it is important people use the correct methods. The energy from waste plant is for non-recyclable waste that can be burnt and provide energy that is fed into the Island’s energy supply.
"Not only does non-burnable waste not provide energy but it can cause damage and prematurely age the energy from waste equipment. We have to take action to minimise this risk.”
