Tributes paid to former Bishop of Winchester

29 September 2014

Tributes have been paid to the former Bishop of Winchester, the Right Reverend Michael Scott-Joynt, who died on Saturday (27 September).

The diocese includes the Channel Islands, and he was regarded as a great supporter of Jersey. As Bishop of Winchester from 1995 to 2011, he made frequent visits to the Island during his bishopric, where he was regarded as a kind and generous man with a warm personality and inclusive leadership.

The Bailiff, Sir Michael Birt, said "I am deeply saddened by the news of the death of the Rt Rev Michael Scott-Joynt, former Bishop of Winchester. He was a faithful and hard-working bishop and a man of great conviction who took an active interest in Jersey and its community.

"His visits were always very welcome and relations between Jersey and the diocese were strong and cordial during his time. The Island can be grateful for his ministry and the way in which he brought people together. He will be missed by the many people of the Island who knew and respected him."

Following retirement he became an honorary assistant bishop in the diocese of Portsmouth but it was during retirement that he suffered much illness. He is survived by his wife Louise, who played a full and supportive part in his ministry, and by two sons and a daughter.
