A new initiative designed to get locally-qualified jobseekers into the construction industry is being launched by Back to Work.
As part of Back to Work’s Construction Programme, Islanders who have little or no experience in the industry will have the opportunity to train on the job. The initiative gives employers the opportunity to recruit and train locally-qualified jobseekers with financial support from Back to Work.
Under the programme, which has been developed through feedback from industry, Back to Work will fund trainees’ wages at minimum wage for up to twelve weeks. During this time trainees will undertake a structured training programme with agreed outcomes which will ensure they have every opportunity to gain essential skills whilst in a real working environment. This initiative is of most value in those areas where there is currently little or no training available, such as; dry lining, tiling, roofing, multi-skilled labouring and block laying.
Develop jobseekers's skills
For the employer to receive financial support, the trainee must be a locally-qualified jobseeker who has little or no relevant experience in the industry.
The Social Security Minister, Deputy Susie Pinel, said “We have seen resurgence in the construction industry in Jersey with major projects underway and several more in the pipeline. This initiative is responding to a current and future demand and will help ensure there are locally qualified employees able to fill some skills gaps. Employers will have the financial support to enable them to train and build a workforce that will meet their business requirements in this growing industry.”
Jobseekers who already have relevant skills and experience in the industry, whilst not eligible for the training initiative, can be matched to employers with suitable vacancies.
