A Macmillan breast cancer nurse has recently joined the breast care team at Jersey General Hospital. Senga McNeil is an experienced Breast Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) who replaces the previous incumbent, who recently retired.
Senga joins Kath Hirani who started as a Breast Care Nurse in May in a new position created in partnership between the Hospital and Macmillan Cancer Support as a response to growing numbers of breast cancer diagnoses on the Island. Kath was previously a midwife with considerable experience on the surgical wards at the Hospital.
Patient care
Both nurses are badged as Macmillan professionals and will support women on their breast cancer journey from diagnosis, through treatment and beyond. They join an established team renowned for excellent patient care. Breast cancer diagnoses account for the largest numbers of new cancer diagnoses each year in Jersey.
Matthew Stephenson, Consultant in General and Oncoplastic Breast Surgery at the General Hospital, said: “We are seeing increasing numbers of breast cancer diagnoses. The breast care team provides wonderful care, but we do need to ensure we can continue to resource the needs of our patients. These new posts will help ensure the team can continue to provide the excellent care it is known for.”
Information and Support
Macmillan Cancer Support (Jersey) supports those affected by cancer in Jersey from its Cancer Information and Support Centre at the Lido Medical Centre. Brian Frith, Chairman of Macmillan Jersey, said: “We are committed to ensuring that no one in Jersey faces cancer alone. Macmillan is known for the very best in cancer support and care. These new posts will have access to a breadth of Macmillan learning and development which will greatly benefit the patients and families going through the difficult journey of a breast cancer diagnosis. We’re delighted to welcome Senga and Kath to the team.”
The nurses will have access to the Macmillan support and learning network including learning and development resources, the opportunity to attend continuous professional development events, access to the organisation’s learning and development grants and support from Macmillan’s regional development team.
