A doctor working in the Emergency Department at Jersey General Hospital has received a police commendation after making a life-saving contribution to a potential suicide case.
Dr Kirstie Ross was presented with the Chief Officer’s Commendation by the States of Jersey Police. The award followed an incident in 2014 when Dr Ross took a call from a member of the public describing an imminent suicide attempt and was able to talk to the caller while at the same time liaising with police officers, who were able to make a successful intervention.
States of Jersey Police Chief Officer, Mike Bowron, said "This award recognises the fast thinking and decisive action of Dr Ross, which undoubtedly saved a life. It is highly appropriate that she is commended for the action she took in what was clearly a dynamic and traumatic situation.
"The States of Jersey Police are pleased to recognise this good partnership work with Health and Social Services, and in particular the exceptional actions of Dr Ross. This award was part of a wider presentation in which nine other certificates were presented to police officers within the Force."
Dr Ross, an Associate Specialist who has worked at the General Hospital since December 2012, received the award alongside Police Constable David Bisson, who worked with her on the incident and was able to ensure a successful outcome to the incident.
The highest level of award
The Chief Officer’s Commendation is the highest level of award that can be bestowed by the States of Jersey Police, recognising significant personal courage, initiative and/or commitment going far above and beyond what might normally be expected from a police officer or civilian.
Dr Ross said "It’s a great honour to have been asked to accept this award. There wasn’t a chance to think about the significance of what was happening at the time, and really I was just doing my job, but when you’ve worked together with another agency and this teamwork has made the difference, then it’s something I’m proud of.”
The three Certificates of Commendation and six Certificates of Appreciation given to the States of Jersey Police officers were for a wide range of investigations including helping to crack a worldwide paedophile ring, a number of serious investigations including rape and murder, and saving the life of a seriously injured driver following a road traffic collision.
Mr Bowron said: "I am immensely proud of the hard work and professionalism of my officers. I know that every one of them sees this as just part of their job, however it’s important for me to take the time to thank them and to recognise their incredible work in very difficult and traumatic situations."
