Chair appointed for sport board

A chair has been appointed to the Shadow Board for Sport, a new independent group that will advise the Assistant Minister on the creation of Jersey Sport - which in turn will take on responsibility for the development of sport in the Island from next summer.

The current chairman of the Jersey Football Association and chairman of the organising committee of the NatWest Island Games, Phil Austin, will take up the position with immediate effect. His recruitment was overseen by the Jersey Appointments Commission and made in line with their policies and procedures.

Mr Austin’s first role will be to assist with the recruitment of up to five other members of the Shadow Board.

Mr Austin said “It is a period of significant change in the organisation of sport in Jersey and I am pleased to be able to play a pivotal role as the new structure emerges. We have a unique opportunity to ensure a strong future for sport so that the economic and social benefits are not only recognised but maximised for everyone involved.”

Assistant Minister with responsibility for Sport, Connétable Steve Pallett, said “I am pleased to accept the recommendation of the independent Panel. Phil Austin has an extremely strong track record in sport in Jersey and has extensive experience at a senior level in the business community. I am delighted he has accepted this important role. This is another positive step forward for sport.”
