Jersey’s States have agreed a package of measures designed to protect and conserve bass stocks. The measures are:
- increase in minimum size to 42cm
- maximum one fish per day per person for recreational fishers
- maximum limit of 50 hooks per person set on the beach
- maximum limit of 100 metres of net per person set on the beach
- increase to 110mm minimum mesh size for nets set on the beach
- a permit will be required to drive on the beach to transport fishing equipment.
The measures come into force on 5 July.
Fishermen are reminded that other controls are already in place for the setting of fishing equipment on beaches, including a seasonal closure and fishermen are urged to ensure they fully comply with all the rules prior to undertaking this activity.
Environment Minister Deputy Steve Luce said “All agree that the evidence concerning the state of the bass stock is not good and that action is needed. This is a good package that ensures consistency with neighbouring jurisdictions and shares out the measures between the commercial and recreational sectors when you take into account other controls that apply to professionals.”
In the States debate, the Minister committed to monitoring the impact and effect of the measures and change them as and when needed.
