St Helier will have new Christmas lights this year. The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) hires a new lighting scheme every three years and this is the year it changes to the new scheme. There will be nearly 50 new frames and side hangers that hang across streets and on lamp columns providing a display with a golden theme, which joins the beautiful ceiling of light that runs through King Street.
DfI's Road Signs and Markings team put up the lights. They began on 17 October and are working right up to 24 November when the Christmas lights are switched on. They start work early in the morning at 6am when town is less busy and use four elevated platforms. The annual hire cost is £17,000 and includes storage and maintenance.
DfI is also responsible for the purchase and decoration of the Christmas trees in the Royal Square and at Wests Centre, and the departrment is contracted to do the Christmas lights on behalf of St Brelade.
The Assistant Minister for Infrastructure, Deputy Richard Rondel said “DfI staff do a terrific job displaying the lights throughout the heart of St Helier every year. I have seen a preview of the new display and I think that it looks great. I look forward to seeing everyone enjoying our wonderful town during the festive period.”
DfI will start taking the lights down on 3 January. It takes about three weeks.
