The Jersey Customs and Immigration Service (JCIS) seized controlled drugs with a street value of £2.6 million from August 2015 to July 2016. This represents an increase on the £2.2 million worth of controlled drugs which were seized by the service during the previous 12 month period.
Seizures of cannabis represented £2.5 million of the total figure, an increase from £1 million the previous year. In addition, £214,000 in cash, suspected to be the proceeds of crime, has been seized by Customs Officers in the past year.
The service continues to work in close collaboration on operational matters with the UK Border Force and National Crime Agency and also maintains strong working relations with the Guernsey Border Agency and French Customs.
The Assistant Minister for Home Affairs, Connétable Deidre Mezbourian, said "These figures reflect the dedicated work of the Jersey Customs and Immigration Service and highlight the importance of maintaining our medium and longer term investment in a strong law enforcement presence at the Island’s borders.
"JCIS have long-established and strong working relations with numerous external agencies and will soon be enhancing their close collaboration with the States of Jersey Police, through the establishment of a joint intelligence unit, to ensure our borders are further protected from all forms of criminal activity."
