French delegation at Jersey summit

09 June 2016

The Government of Jersey and the Breton department of Ille-et-Vilaine are holding their annual summit in Jersey today (9 June 2016).

Since they signed a cooperation agreement in 2008, which was renewed in 2014, Ille-et-Vilaine and the Government of Jersey have met annually to explore opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation.

The Chief Minister, Senator Ian Gorst, and the President of the Conseil Départemental of Ille-et-Vilaine, Jean-Luc Chenut, will jointly chair the summit. Deputy Al Brouard, representing the States of Guernsey, will also attend the summit as an observer, reflecting Guernsey’s increasing engagement with Ille et Vilaine.

Senator Gorst said “I look forward to welcoming President Chenut and his delegation to Jersey. France is our nearest neighbour and it is important that we continue to develop new links at regional and national levels. This summit provides politicians and officials from both governments to identify potential areas of cooperation across a range of sectors."

Among the subjects likely to be discussed at the summit are:

  • trade opportunities
  • construction
  • educational programmes
  • cultural and sports exchanges
  • environmental issues.

More than 30 elected representatives and officers from the two jurisdictions are likely to take part. Representatives of the Jersey Financial Services Commission will also give a presentation on the Island’s finance industry.

Ille-et-Vilaine will host the next summit in 2017.
