The Jersey Fishermen’s Association (JFA), together with the Department of the Environment, will host a conference in Jersey for Channel fishermen on 4 and 5 of April at St Helier Yacht Club.
The meeting, known as the “Channel Potting Conference”, has occurred annually for almost forty years and was established to reduce conflict between static potting vessels and mobile gear (e.g. trawlers and dredgers) boats. Whilst the meeting still addresses this topic, the forum is now used to discuss a wide range of issues that impact on fishing and fishermen.
Fishermen and their representatives from Belgium France, Ireland, the Netherlands, the UK, as well as the Channel Islands will be attending the meeting.
Don Thompson, President of the JFA said “Whilst we don’t have the Channel fleet of times past, it is still vital that fishermen have the opportunity to meet and discuss important issues. Having the meeting in Jersey is fantastic and is an opportunity to showcase our vibrant and thriving industry to our neighbours.”
Greg Morel, Assistant Director Marine Resources said “I am delighted that the Channel Potting Conference is been held in Jersey. Fishing is an important industry in the Island and the Island provides a great backdrop to host this important meeting.”
