Rwandan delegation visits Jersey

06 January 2017

Rwanda’s Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Claver Gatete, will lead a Rwandan Government visit to Jersey on 9 and 10 January 2017.

The visit will strengthen the links that were formalised in the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Jersey and Rwanda in May last year. Minister Gatete’s delegation will meet the Chief Minister, Senator Ian Gorst, the External Relations Minister, Senator Sir Philip Bailhache, the Assistant Chief Minister, Senator Philip Ozouf, and the Chair of Jersey Overseas Aid (JOA), Deputy Carolyn Labey.

The focal point of the visit will be the formal agreement to begin a two-year, JOA-funded project that will see the Royal Jersey Agricultural and Horticultural Society work with Send a Cow, in cooperation with the Rwanda Agriculture Board, to increase milk yields through artificial insemination with the Jersey breed.

Senator Bailhache said “I look forward to welcoming Minister Gatete to Jersey, and to building on the warm relationship that already exists between our two governments. The memorandum of understanding that was signed last year formalised our intentions to find new ways of working together. The new project that has now been launched with the help of Jersey Overseas Aid is an excellent example of this.”

Deputy Labey said “Jersey Overseas Aid is delighted to continue the work begun in Rwanda over a decade ago, which has contributed to increasing milk production by 400% nationwide, and the provision of cross-bred Jersey heifers to tens of thousands of poor families. The amazing success of Jersey’s dairy cows in Rwanda is a matter of pride for both countries, and a superb example of genuinely sustainable development cooperation.”

The delegation will also meet the Bailiff, William Bailhache, the Director General of the Jersey Financial Services Commission, John Harris, and representatives of the financial services industry.
