Unemployment figures released today (12 April 2017) by the States of Jersey Statistics Unit show a continued fall in the number of people who are registered as actively seeking work (ASW) in Jersey.
The overall number of those ASW in March was 1180; the lowest recorded in six years since June 2010, 100 lower than at the end of December 2016 and 200 lower than March 2016.
The figures, which capture a downward trend in unemployment are buoyed by a continued drop in youth unemployment. A peak in January 2013 showed 590 young people under the age of 25 registered as ASW. Today’s report shows this age group to have fallen significantly since then to 220.
The Minister for Social Security, Deputy Susie Pinel, said the figures released today were encouraging.
“I am delighted that the unemployment figures released today show a continued downward trend in unemployment. It is especially encouraging to see the fall in youth unemployment.
“For many young people success comes from being given the opportunity to gain valuable work experience and an employer being willing to give them their first step on the career ladder. We have seen excellent support from employers who recruit candidates through Back to Work, as well as offering development opportunities through our paid training initiatives and work placements.”
