A team of seven new female prison officers have been recruited to work at La Moye Prison.
It is the first time that an all-female team have been recruited at the same time and they were congratulated at a passing-out ceremony, in front of their family, friends, senior prison staff and the Home Affairs Minister, at Communicare, last week.
The new team, employed as part of an all-female recruitment drive, are Deborah McCance, Ashley Goodwin, Victoria Aley, Kirsten Park, Stephanie Da Silva and Lauren Quemard, who will become prison operations officers, and Kathryn Mills as a full-time nurse/health care officer.
Operations officers are responsible for the ongoing management of the control room, the gatehouse, external and internal security patrols and external prisoner escorts.
La Moye Prison Governor Bill Millar said: “This is the first time that the prison service has worked with an all-female batch of recruits and I am confident that they will all do well as they now take up their operational responsibilities. They have proved to be an excellent group to work with and all of them rose to every challenge they faced, producing consistently good results throughout their training. I would like to congratulate all of them and welcome the seven new recruits to join the excellent and professional team working at La Moye.”
The recent HM Chief Inspector of Prisons report praised the professionalism of the officers working at the prison. Most prisoners expressed appreciation for the treatment and support they received from officers, who were enthusiastic, committed and proud in their roles. The report also stated that the governor and ministers had provided consistency in leadership and good-quality continuous professional development.
The seven female officers, who completed nine weeks of training, raised more than £2,000 together, a couple of weeks ago, for the servicemen and veterans charity Rock2Recovery by abseiling down Noirmont Point with the support from the States of Jersey Fire Service.
