Tributes to Deputy Richard Rondel

Ministers have paid tribute to St Helier Deputy Richard Rondel, who has died after a long illness.
Deputy Rondel was first elected to the States Assembly, on 14th November 2011, as the representative for St Helier Number 3/4. He was re-elected to that district in 2014 and again in 2018, when he topped the polls.

In his first term Deputy Rondel was a member of the Public Accounts Committee and Corporate Scrutiny Panels. After the 2014 elections he was appointed Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and also served on the Planning Applications Panel, latterly the Planning Committee.

While serving as Assistant Minister, Deputy Rondel provided a useful link with the Parish, and was very supportive of the work of the Department. The Deputy was a keen advocate of Liberty Bus and was instrumental in increasing the number of bus shelters across the Island. During his term of office, Richard saw the completion the St Peter’s Valley Path.

Deputy Rondel was very knowledgeable about the Island and provided valuable guidance in meetings. He was extremely well respected by officers, who said: “Richard was a delight to work with. He treated people with respect and was always prepared to listen. He had a great sense of humour and a generous nature, which was well illustrated when he brought in a sack of new potatoes for staff.”

Chief Minister, Senator John Le Fondré said: “My thoughts, and those of my States Assembly colleagues, are with Richard’s family and friends today. Richard served the island as a States Member with a compassionate approach and a clear sense of duty. He will be much missed by us all.”

External Relations Minister, Senator Ian Gorst, was Chief Minister when Deputy Rondel was Assistant Minister for Infrastructure, and he said: “Richard we will miss you, your smile and positive can-do attitude. You’ve showed such strength and determination. Our thoughts and prayers are with all your family and friends. It’s been a privilege to know you and work with you.”

Economic Development Minister, Senator Lyndon Farnham, said: “Richard’s warm presence, zest for life and, ultimately, his courage, will be greatly missed. My thoughts are with his family at this time and, until we meet again, may he rest in peace.”
