The first ministerial response since the introduction of a new e-petitions system has been issued.
The e-petition system is a way for Jersey residents to escalate issues they feel the government should take action on. Chief Minister, Senator John Le Fondré, said: “The e-petition system is a great way for islanders to have their voices heard and for the government to respond, explaining any action that is planned.
“So far, 25 petitions have been uploaded and five of those have attracted more than 1,000 signatures. All e-petitions that exceed 1,000 signatures will get a response from the Council of Ministers within 28 days.”
An e-petition was submitted in July, asking the Jersey government to introduce a compensation scheme for people who contract mesothelioma, a condition caused by exposure to asbestos.
In their response, Ministers acknowledge the devastating effect that diffuse mesothelioma has on sufferers and their families, and the potential need for a compensation scheme.
The Social Security Minister has already confirmed her commitment to reviewing the options for potential redress schemes as part of the larger Social Security review that is taking place. This commitment was confirmed at a Council of Ministers meeting on 5 September 2018.
Social Security Minister, Deputy Judy Martin, said: “Employers are required, by law, to hold liability insurance and sufferers of diffuse mesothelioma may be able to claim, dependent on individual circumstances.
“The regulation of activities which may carry a risk of exposure to asbestos has developed over the years, and the prevention of exposure to such risks is one the highest priorities for the Health and Safety Inspectorate.”
The Social Security review will consider the need for a scheme. In the meantime there are a range of benefits available to support people who contract mesothelioma and other asbestos related diseases.
