The Emergency Planning Officer has published advice and information regarding the risks of flooding in the Grands Vaux area.
On 23 November last year, the Emergency Planning Office organised Exercise ‘Fluvius’ to test the multi-agency response to a flooding event in the Grands Vaux area and to identify opportunities for positive change.
The scenario was a 1 in 100 year major flooding incident in the Grands Vaux area resulting in an immediate response by all of the emergency services and States Departments.
Once the incident had been stabilised, the scenario changed from the ‘response phase’ to the ‘recovery phase’ to look at how the longer term impacts of a major flood could be managed to return the area back to normality.
Following the exercise an evaluation was undertaken to identify learning points and areas for improvements.
The Emergency Planning office is now working with individual services and Departments to implement the recommendations.
One of the key recommendations was to publish the “Severe Weather and Grands Vaux Flood Plans” including flood maps to raise awareness to the risks of flooding in the Grands Vaux area, supported flood advice and information. These have now been published on gov.je
The Emergency Planning Officer, Mark James, said: “There is a multi-agency working group, including the Infrastructure and Environment Departments and the Ports of Jersey looking at flooding issues. Further work will be carried out over the next 12 months to improve our understanding of both coastal and inland flood risks in Jersey. As part of this project, we will produce island-wide flood risk maps and make them available to the public in a similar format to the maps available online for the UK.”
