Jersey Overseas Aid (JOA) and Skills Jersey Trackers Programme have joined up to begin a partnership aiming to provide potential volunteers for JOA’s annual community work projects.
It has been agreed that every year, Trackers will nominate up to four apprentices, aged 18 and over, towards the JOA’s volunteer selection process for community work projects. JOA has agreed to interview each nominee and aim to select at least two for voluntary positons.
Jersey Overseas Aid is an independent international aid agency funded by the States of Jersey whose aim is to help to reduce poverty and provide humanitarian aid in disasters and emergencies around the world.
Deputy Carolyn Labey, Minister for International Development, said: “I am delighted we have signed this agreement with Trackers. JOA are committed to giving Islanders the opportunity to benefit from these potentially life-changing projects overseas and have seen what they can do for people’s confidence, outlook and employability.”
Since 1972, Jersey has enabled more than 1,000 volunteers to work with developing countries on over 100 projects. Community work projects help raise awareness in Jersey of global development issues as well as playing an important part in Islander’s personal lives.
Assistant Minister for Education, Deputy Jeremy Maçon, added: “This is a very exciting opportunity for Trackers apprenticeships at Skills Jersey. Being part of these projects is a life-changing experience and not only does it help to build confidence it leads to a more skilled individual.”
The Trackers programme, which is part of Skills Jersey, supports people aged 16 and over in their chosen apprenticeships by providing mentoring and funding for training fees.
