The project to replace the lights in the tunnel starts on the evening of Monday 8 January.
The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) will be closing the tunnel nightly:
- Sunday to Thursday
- from 7pm to 6am to enable the lighting to be replaced over a 12-week period.
- the tunnel will remain open on Friday and Saturday evenings.
During closures, there will be no pedestrian access. A pedestrian diversion route through Snow Hill car park will be signed.
The existing lighting system is over 20 years old and has reached the end of its life.
The likelihood of total system failure is high and represents a risk to public safety. DfI has therefore taken the decision to replace the existing lighting system and update the control system and all the associated cabling.
Upon completion, the tunnel lighting system will be in line with modern lighting standards for both vehicles and pedestrians, and will be fit for use for at least the next 20 years.
The new lighting system will significantly improve the lighting level for both drivers and pedestrians and be able to constantly moderate the lighting to the optimum level within the tunnel, based on the ambient lighting outside the tunnel.
The new system will represent a leap forward in the capability and resilience of the lighting system, and will ensure that the lights remain on in the tunnel for decades to come.
