Commercial vehicle owners have less than two months to ensure that any heavy goods vehicles weighing more than 7.5 tonnes have been inspected by Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVS) for roadworthiness.
On 14 May 2019, the deadline will close for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) to have their first inspection under the new Annual Roadworthiness Inspection scheme. DVS will then open inspections for medium goods vehicles (MGV) (commercial vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes).
Letters have this week been sent to owners of medium goods vehicles to notify them of the inspections, which start from 14 May 2019 and must be completed by 14 May 2020, should they wish to book in advance.
The HGV inspections were introduced in May 2018 as the first phase of a scheme to improve the standard of commercial vehicles on Jersey’s roads. The MGV inspections will form the second part of this scheme.
Gordon Forrest, Inspector of Motor Traffic at DVS, said: “The annual inspections are an important part of the new Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Licence Scheme which we have introduced to ensure that commercially operated vehicles are safe and well-maintained. We started the inspections for HGVs last year, and we will launch the second phase, for MGVs, in May. The inspections check the vehicles against a set of recognised standards to make sure that they are free from defects and safe for Jersey's roads.”
The majority of Jersey’s registered HGVs have been inspected so far, but with only two months left before the first inspection deadline, there are still a large number of vehicles left to be inspected.
Mr Forrest added: “HGVs that haven’t been inspected will not be allowed on Jersey’s roads once the deadline has passed, so it’s important that owners take steps to get their vehicles booked in without further delay. Owners of MGVs wishing to secure an inspection date for May onwards should also get in touch.”
HGV owners who have not booked their vehicle in for its first inspection should contact DVS as soon as possible by calling +44(0)1534 448631 or by emailing dvsbookings@gov.je.
MGV owners can also get in touch to book an inspection date ahead of the second phase.
