The Jersey Customs and Immigration Service (JCIS) is inviting businesses and residents to help develop the Government of Jersey’s new immigration system. A consultation has been launched
online and will run until 17 January 2020.
The UK Government has proposed changes to its immigration system that come into effect after Brexit, from 1 January 2021. This new proposed system will lead to changes including:
- An end to free movement for EU nationals
- A single global immigration system
- The introduction of different permissions for different talents and skills
- Different nationalities will be treated differently
Although Jersey’s immigration system is aligned to the UK’s, the island does have the ability to develop its own policy. JCIS aims to develop a policy which responds to the needs of the business community whilst keeping the island secure.
The consultation is open to those who will be affected by any changes, including businesses. Luke Goddard, Acting Director of Customs & Immigration, said: “Although we aim to develop an immigration system which is aligned to the UK, we have to consider the needs and context that are unique to Jersey.
“That’s why I would encourage anyone who may be impacted by changes to Jersey’s immigration system to take part in this consultation and help us develop a system that is tailored to fit our island.”
