Bruce Bridal was born in Zimbabwe and started his career in 1976 as a beach lifeguard in Durban, South Africa. After moving to Jersey in 1979 he worked as a States of Jersey lifeguard at the tower next to El Tico until 1983.
From the beach he moved to the pool at Fort Regent in 1983 and then to Les Quennevais Sports Centre in 1996 to help prepare for its opening, where he has worked until his retirement.
Bruce Bridal said: “A career highlight for me was working at the then brand-new iconic pool at Fort Regent in the 80s. After I retire, I will still enjoy the great facilities at Les Quennevais as well as swimming and surfing in the sea – we are lucky to have such beautiful beaches in the island.”
The Assistant Minister for Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture with delegated responsibility for sport, Senator Steve Pallett, said: "Having known Bruce for many years I wish him all the best in his retirement. Bruce has been a dedicated and loyal member of the team at Les Quennevais and I am sure both his colleagues and users of Centre will miss his friendly disposition and helpful approach.”
Rachel Sawyer, Centre Manager at Les Quennevais Sport Centre, said: “Bruce has given four decades of service to the community and has passed on his love of swimming to many youngsters, teaching hundreds of children how to swim at both Fort Regent and Les Quennevais Sports Centre.
”Bruce is a well-loved lifeguard, he has also helped to keep our pools clean and safe for nearly 75,000 customers who use the facilities every year.
“There have been many changes in lifeguarding techniques during Bruce’s career, he has embraced them while bringing his own insight and expertise to the profession.”
Bruce’s personal achievements include a sixth place in the 2012 World Open Water Swim race in Italy and two silver medals at the 2017 European Masters held at London’s Olympic Park, in both 400m and 800m freestyle.
