Jersey Ministers in meeting with UK Prime Minister

Two Jersey Ministers have attended the Scottish Conservative conference in Aberdeen, where they attended meetings with the UK Prime Minister and other senior Cabinet members.

External Relations Minister, Senator Ian Gorst, and Deputy Chief Minister, Senator Lyndon Farnham, had a meeting with Theresa May, where they discussed Jersey’s valued relationship with the UK, the island’s constitutional position and opportunities for closer working on areas like trade.

The Jersey delegation to the conference also held a reception, where the Secretary of State for Defra, Michael Gove, spoke about the agricultural and fisheries interests Scotland shares with Jersey and about the island’s long tradition of stability and enterprise.

Senator Farnham said: “We’re pleased that the Prime Minister made time in her schedule to meet us to discuss Jersey’s constitution and opportunities for us to work more closely together. The meeting was extremely important in terms of our ongoing relationship.”

Senator Gorst said: “It is important that we continue to maintain a close working relationship between the Jersey and UK governments. We have been attending regular meetings with our counterparts at Westminster since Brexit negotiations began and we have already agreed a new customs union.

“Last year the UK government reaffirmed its commitment to the historic and valued constitutional relationship between the UK and Jersey and we hope we can maintain the fundamentals of our existing relationship with the UK through the Brexit process.”
