Further opportunity to study Social Work degree

Islanders interested in studying a new degree course that will help build a home-grown team of social workers have a further opportunity to apply for a place.

The on-island degree is part of the Government’s international and local recruitment campaign, Let’s Be Honest, which was launched this month to build a more permanent and highly skilled workforce of social workers.

The application deadline for the Social Work degree at Highlands College, which starts in September 2019, has been extended from the end of March until Wednesday, 1 May as the second and final wave of recruitment for the first year of the degree gets underway.

It is the island’s first BA (Hons) Social Work Degree (Jersey), and it will be run by University College Jersey at Highlands College, in a partnership with the University of Sussex.

Mark Rogers, Director General for Children, Young People, Education and Skills, said that the degree was part of the department’s drive to recruit more permanent social workers.

“This is an exciting opportunity to grow our own highly skilled workforce to protect the welfare of our most vulnerable children and young people,” he said. “The Government’s ambition is for Jersey to be the best place for children to grow up in.”

There are between 12 and 20 places on the Social Work degree course, and applications are welcome from anyone from Jersey or Guernsey who is over 18 and who has the equivalent of three A-levels at grades A, B, B to B, B, B. The course is open to school leavers and to mature students with relevant experience.

The deadline for all applications is 5pm on Wednesday 1 May 2019.
