Minister attends International Monetary Fund and World Bank annual meetings

17 October 2019

The External Relations Minister is in Washington DC this week, to attend meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank (WB).

On his visit to the annual autumn meeting of the IMF and WB, Senator Ian Gorst will attend plenary sessions, seminars and receptions where key decision-makers will discuss FinTech, digital disruption, emerging markets and challenges to global growth.

He will also be attending the Commonwealth Finance Ministers meeting, which will bring together senior representatives of Commonwealth nations.

Senator Gorst said: “The annual World Bank and IMF meeting is one of the largest gatherings of top decision-makers in the field of finance, trade, economics and professional services. It is a unique opportunity to meet government ministers, central bank governors, international regulators, and senior industry executives.”

“It is important that Jersey is represented at top-tier global events. I am looking forward to holding a range of bilateral meetings with Ministerial counterparts from the USA, Africa and the Middle East, as well as with senior executives from global banking groups. This is an important opportunity to promote the Island’s reputation as a high-quality centre for well-regulated financial and professional services, which is essential for winning new business and providing jobs.”

Last night, Senator Gorst delivered a speech at the official opening of the Jersey Finance New York office.

Jersey has been seeing an increase in Jersey-US business flows: both from institutional investors using Jersey’s services for pension funds and Limited Partnerships, and from funds held in Jersey being invested in US technology businesses.

Senator Gorst added: “Launching this office in the world’s largest institutional investment market enables Jersey to enhance its visibility in the U.S. and further demonstrate how well Jersey is placed as a gateway to Europe for U.S. alternative fund managers.”
