Children aged between 4-11 can take part in this year’s Summer Reading Challenge at Jersey Library. The Challenge aims to help children read whatever makes them happy while having fun and begins on Friday 17 July.
This year’s theme is ‘Silly Squad.’ To take part, children need to read six books over the summer and talk about them. Children who complete the challenge will receive a medal and a certificate in the autumn term.
This year’s Challenge has been updated to allow children to take part while reducing the risk of infection. Jersey Library will still be providing a pack for each child, complete with a collecting folder, stickers, information and activities.
However, to maintain social distancing in the Jersey Library building, parents will not need to fill out a joining form for their child. In addition, children are encouraged to talk about the books they have read with their parents, rather than coming to the library to talk about their latest read.
Children can borrow library books or eBooks downloaded from Jersey Library. This year, children can also read non-library books as part of the challenge.
Cathy Bithell, the Team Leader who will be leading the Challenge, said: "Although the Summer Reading Challenge will look slightly different this year, we still look forward to supporting the Island’s children to discover and deepen their love of reading.
"Last year, over 2000 children took part in the challenge, and we hope for just as many participants this year, despite the slight changes to the rules."
Parents can collect their Summer Reading Challenge packs from Jersey Library from Friday 17 July. Children have until 12 September to read six books, and parents can contact the library to ensure their child receives a medal and certificate.
