Summer Reading Challenge picks up pace

Jersey Library has given out over 1400 Summer Reading Challenge packs to keen readers, compared to just over 1100 given out by this time last year. The Challenge - which encourages children aged 4-11 to keep reading through the summer - launched on the 17 July.

This year’s theme is ‘Silly Squad.’ To take part, children need to pick up a Challenge pack, read six books over the summer, and talk about them. Children who complete the challenge will receive a medal and a certificate in the autumn term. 

Following the outbreak of COVID-19, this year’s Challenge has been updated to allow children to take part while reducing the risk of infection. 

Children can talk about books they have read with their parents (rather than coming to the library to talk about their book) and can borrow library books, e-books, or read their own books as part of the challenge.

Summer Reading Challenge packs are still available at Jersey Library, and at the mobile library, which has recently restarted its service after being off the road since late March.

Cathy Bithell, Team Leader who manages the Challenge, said: “I know so many children look forward to taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge, and I’m thrilled that we’ve had such a fantastic response, despite the slight changes to the way the Challenge will work.

“There is still time to take part, so I’d urge any keen readers to visit the Jersey Library or the mobile library to pick up their packs.”
