Maternity ward refurbishment to start

13 August 2021

The Maternity Unit at the General Hospital will undergo refurbishment from Monday 16 August, to include the Special Care Baby Unit and the provision of ensuite facilities on Delivery suite.

The work being undertaken will provide modern facilities and while there will be disruption at times, this will not impact on the care that is provided. All families using the service will continue to be supported by the team.

Head of Midwifery, Dana Scott, said: "This is exciting news for us in maternity as the unit hasn't had any significant refurbishments during the last 25 years.

"The work will be transformational in modernising the facilities and is a planned maintenance backlog project working within the footprint of the existing unit. I'd like to reassure Islanders that while this work will be disruptive at times, there will not be any significant impacts on services. Our teams will be working hard to ensure families continue to be supported throughout this time."

The refurbishment will be split into 11 phases with the first phase of work starting in August and ending in February 2022. The entire work will be completed by October 2023.
