Jersey Police and colleagues from Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVS) are reminding motorists to
check their vehicles and ensure they’re roadworthy ahead of the colder winter months.
Police officers and representatives from DVS will be carrying out a Winter Road Check this
afternoon, Thursday 17 November between 4-6pm, at the last layby on Victoria Avenue.
As well as inspecting vehicles for defects, they’ll also be giving advice about how drivers can best
prepare their vehicles for the winter months.
Inspector Callum O’Connor from the States of Jersey Police said: “We know motorists don’t
always adjust their driving styles when the weather changes. Roads can be icy, particularly in the
mornings, and this has a potential impact on stopping distances.
“It’s the responsibility of all road users to make sure their cars or bikes are roadworthy, regularly
carrying out basic checks to ensure their lights are working and tyres are in good condition.”
The Police and DVS officials are proactively advertising the road check in advance to encourage
drivers to think about their own vehicles this winter.
Gordon Forrest, Head of DVS and Inspector of Motor Traffic, added: “The intention is not to catch
motorists out, we just genuinely want to ensure Jersey’s roads are safe and that the vehicles on
them are in good roadworthy condition.
“We hope to use this event as a chance to speak to motorists, offer advice and answer questions
about maintaining vehicles as the wetter, colder weather starts to arrive.”
