At 00.01 on Tuesday 22 August 2023, the surveillance zone for Avian influenza (bird flu) lifted in Jersey, following
completion of surveillance activity and no further confirmed cases.
Protection and surveillance zones were introduced on 19 July following confirmed cases of bird flu.
The Islandwide surveillance zone required that all bird keepers increase biosecurity measures and
prevent the movement of birds off-premises without a licence.
The 3km radius protection zone
which was in place in St Martin lifted on 14 August.
While the legal requirements have now ended, the Animal Health and Welfare team still encourage
bird keepers to separate their flocks from wild birds wherever possible and to maintain high levels
of biosecurity.
All imported birds still need to be housed for a minimum of 30 days on arrival, and importers need
to submit a housing and biosecurity plan with their application.
Poultry keepers are encouraged to continue with strict biosecurity measures, remain vigilant, and
report any signs of avian flu to the Animal Health and Welfare team on 01534 441600 or by email
to rva@gov.je.
Anyone that keeps poultry is recommended to register with the Animal Health and
Welfare team.
