Over 1,800 Islanders applied during the first window of the e-bike grant scheme, which supports a
random selection of applicants with a subsidy for buying an e-bike from a participating local bike
shop.
In response to the number of applications, the Minister for Energy and Climate Change, Deputy
Hilary Jeune, has doubled the number of grants to be awarded in this first window to just over 200.
Following the random selection process, applicants will receive an email this week to confirm if
they have been successful in the draw.
The application window was open from 12 January for one week. The next opportunity for Islanders
to apply will be in April, with application windows being scheduled every three months until the
end of 2024.
The scheme received:
- 1,577 applications for standard e-bikes
- 195 applications for e-cargo bikes
- 42 applications for adapted e-cycles
The grants are £300 for a standard e-bike, £600 for an e-cargo bike, or £600 for an adapted e-cycle.
The Climate Emergency Fund, which is specifically designed to meet the commitments in the
Carbon Neutral Roadmap and reduce carbon emissions, has allocated £300,000 to the e-bike grant
scheme.
Minister for Energy and Climate Change, Deputy Hilary Jeune, said: “I am really impressed and so
pleased with the response to the first application window of our e-bike grant scheme, particularly
the high interest in e-cargo bikes and adapted e-cycles.
“To meet this demand, I am allocating more awards to this quarter, which means over 200 Islanders
will be receiving an email to confirm their application was successful.
“Low carbon transport options such as e-bikes have an important role to play in reducing Jersey’s
greenhouse gas emissions, and the high interest in the scheme shows the demand for e-bikes
locally, and the readiness from Islanders to make positive changes to help the environment.
“It’s great to see some of the local bike shops responding to Islanders’ enthusiasm by introducing
deals on e-bikes. This will hopefully make buying an e-bike even more accessible even without the
grant.
“For those who weren’t successful this time around, or those who may have missed the application
window, there will be another opportunity to apply for the next round in April.”
