Islanders are being invited to contribute to the creation of a Music Manifesto, which will set
out the values, aims, principles and requirements for the development of Jersey’s music
sector and community. The Manifesto aims to create a ‘unified voice of the music sector’.
The first draft of the Music Manifesto is currently under development by an independent UK
music expert in consultation with musicians and other stakeholders from across the Island.
All other Islanders are invited to contribute to the co-production of the Music Manifesto by
joining the Creative Island Partnership, which will be the forum for developing the document.
The Minister for Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture, Deputy Kirsten Morel,
said: “Music is an important element and an invaluable part of Island life. I hope that all
Islanders who are involved in music either professionally or as a leisure pursuit will want to
contribute to this manifesto.
“Getting involved now will enable people to contribute to a co-produced document, which
will set the values and aims of the music community in partnership with all stakeholders. This
will in turn inform Government actions and initiatives to develop and support the music
sector.”
Minister for Children and Education, Deputy Inna Gardiner, said: “Music has many benefits for
Islanders of all ages, but we know that children especially benefit from having access to
music. The benefits are not just academic but enrich their lives in many ways.
“We work closely with several organisations to provide music opportunities in schools: I
would encourage any of these organisations to helps us produce the Music Manifesto and
ensure that we can continue to foster a love of music in future generations.”
Anyone who wants to get involved should join the Creative Island Partnership (CIP), which
has been established by the Government as a forum for individuals interested in working
together to deliver the objectives of the Arts Strategy.
The CIP is a network that includes:
- regularly funded arts and cultural organisations
- lead partners in sport, education, business, health, tourism and environment
- independent expert arts and cultural advisors (who may be working internationally)
- a wider group of leaders, creative practitioners and entrepreneurs whose work is
connected to the creative sector
The CIP can be joined at any time.
Members are expected to be asked to give their views on
the draft Music Manifesto at the end of November.
