The number of vouchers available for e-bikes, e-cargo bikes and adapted e-cycles, as part of the
Government of Jersey’s subsidy scheme, has been more than doubled for the July application
window.
From midday today, 17 July, Islanders can enter the third quarterly ballot for vouchers, which can
be redeemed at local participating bike shops.
Following the application levels in January and April, but with the comparatively low redemption
figures, the number available has again been increased.
This month, 350 vouchers will be awarded
(220 for e-bikes, 110 for e-cargo bikes, and 20 for adapted e-cycles). This is more than double the
165 vouchers awarded in April.
Minister for Energy and Climate Change, Deputy Hilary Jeune, said: “The number of applicants in
the first two windows was excellent, with well over 1,000 each time, but the number actually
redeemed was lower than we would have liked. We’re regularly reviewing and evolving the scheme,
and we’re making more vouchers available this time around to help ensure more Islanders who
really want them are able to get their hands on them.
“We’re committed to helping people make the shift from petrol or diesel vehicles to electric
vehicles, and these subsidies support those who are considering buying an e-bike but need that
extra nudge and financial help to get there.
“This scheme forms part of our wider cross-Government work to encourage sustainable transport,
and the Minister for Infrastructure will soon be announcing more details about our plans to
improve the Island’s cycling and walking networks. Programmes such as the ‘Love to Ride’ scheme
show there is a clear appetite for cycling in Jersey, and we’re working to make getting on a bike as
accessible, attractive and safe as possible.”
Vouchers for £300 for a standard e-bike, £600 for an e-cargo bike, and £600 for an adapted e-cycle
are backed by the Climate Emergency Fund, which supports the policies of the Carbon Neutral
Roadmap.
A total of £300,000 has been allocated to the scheme for its two-year duration, aiming to
incentivise behaviour change away from car journeys to this low emission way of getting around.
Since the scheme launched in January, more than £32,000 worth of vouchers have been redeemed.
Any vouchers which expire without being redeemed are reallocated to someone else in a future
quarterly release.
The July application window opened at midday today, Monday 17 July 2023, and runs for a week.
