Women and people with a cervix who are aged between 25 and 64 are encouraged to opt-in and book their free cervical screening test this January, as part of Cervical Cancer Awareness Month.
Cervical cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in women and can be prevented through regular screening. Cervical cancer can be successfully treated if diagnosed at an early stage.
Cervical screening detects Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which is a viral infection passed between skin to skin and sexual contact. HPV is the main cause of cervical cancer.
Those aged 25-49 are screened every three years and those aged 50-64, every 5 years.
Islanders need to opt-in to the service through their GP or by calling Le Bas Centre on 01534 443781. Once they have gone to their initial appointment, they will then be routinely invited every three or five years, depending on their age.
Deputy Director of Public Health, Grace Norman, said: “Cervical screening can save your life. If you are a woman or a person with a cervix and turning 25, I urge you to opt-in. It is important that everyone who is eligible for cervical screening attends their appointments regularly as most cases can be treated if caught early."
