Independent Prison Monitoring Board recruitment

19 November 2024

Jersey's Independent Prison Monitoring Board is looking for new members to continue its work over a four-year term.

The board was established in 2017 and is made up of volunteers who are responsible for monitoring the treatment of prisoners at La Moye Prison and all matters that affect their welfare, such as education and medical care.

Members of the IPMB make regular visits to HMP La Moye to check the conditions and the treatment of prisoners and ensure that their welfare and human rights are being upheld. They will also attend monthly meetings, regular training sessions and deal with queries from prisoners relating to the management of the prison.

This role is very rewarding for anyone who is looking for an opportunity to work within our community and give back some of their time. Individuals from diverse backgrounds and communities, and with varied lived experience are encouraged to apply.

All positions are for a four-year term, and DBS checks will take place during the recruitment process. The time commitment is approximately 10 hours per month and applicants must be able to meet these requirements.

The Minister for Justice and Home Affairs, Deputy Mary Le Hegarat said: “Members of Jersey's Independent Prison Monitoring Board monitor the day-to-day life in our local prison to ensure that proper standards of care and decency are maintained.

“The role is about fairness and decency and is a rewarding opportunity for Islanders who want to make a tangible difference to the Prison community.

“La Moye houses a diverse range of prisoners. To best represent them, we need a diverse board, so I encourage applications from individuals from a variety of ages and backgrounds."
