Refresh of the Island Outcome Indicators

02 August 2024

The Island Outcome Indicators, which are used to evaluate progress towards Islanders’ ten key ambitions for future life in Jersey, have been refreshed and relaunched.

Ian Cope, Chief Statistician, said: “The Island Outcomes and their indicators serve as a framework that enables measurement of sustainable well-being in Jersey. Statistics Jersey have carried out a review to improve both the content and presentation of the indicators, which should make it easier for sustainable well-being to be considered in the decisions which affect our Island.”

Future Jersey was a 2016 consultation where thousands of Islanders provided their views on what they wanted Jersey life to be like in the future. The exercise identified ten long term “Island Outcomes” for Jersey, grouped into the three sustainable wellbeing themes of community, economy and environment. For example under the community theme one outcome is: “We will be an Island where people enjoy long, healthy, active lives”.

Island Outcome Indicators are used to monitor how Jersey is doing in each of the ten outcomes. These are maintained by Statistics Jersey, who have carried out a review of the published indicators over the last year. The review aimed to make it easier for users to evaluate progress towards the ambitions outlined in the 2016 Future Jersey consultation.

Both the range of indicators, and how they were presented, were considered. A more focussed set of indicators was produced, returning more closely to the set identified through Future Jersey. In addition, a new way of presenting the data was developed so that users can see both the detail of individual indicators, and the big picture across each of the ten outcomes and the three sustainable wellbeing themes.

One of Future Jersey’s outcomes was entitled ‘Learn and Grow’. This was changed when the indicators were initially published in 2018 to be titled ‘Children’. One recommendation of the review was to restore the original title of ‘Learn and Grow’, so that all ten outcomes are relevant to the whole population.

More details of the review, how it was carried out, and the decisions made are described in Island Outcome Indicators Review Summary document.
