73-year-old jailed for drug smuggling

10 January 2025

A 73-year-old man has been sentenced to two years imprisonment for attempting to import amphetamine into the Island, with a street value of £65,000.

Paul CASSIDY, born on 30 January 1951, from Brentwood appeared before Jersey’s Royal Court today, Friday 10 January 2025.

CASSIDY arrived in the Island on Saturday 12 October 2024 on board the Condor vessel from Poole, driving a Vauxhall Astra. He was stopped by Jersey Customs and Immigration officers and presented a driving licence in the name of Edward Bushell stating that he was due to stay in the Island for two days but had missed the ferry the previous evening.

A search of his vehicle was carried out during which a green taped package was discovered concealed under the vehicle between the fuel tank and the vehicle chassis. CASSIDY initially denied all knowledge of the package which was later found to contain 810 grams of amphetamine. A further 8.6 grams of amphetamine was found in CASSIDY’s wallet.

During interview CASSIDY admitted providing false identification and that the personal amount of amphetamine found in his wallet had been given to him, some of which he had used during his journey. In interview, he denied knowledge of the package found beneath the vehicle stating that he had brought the vehicle to Jersey on behalf of a third party who he declined to name.
