GST visitor refund scheme
Jersey's goods and services tax (GST) is charged on most sales, but visitors may be able to claim it back on single purchases of more than £300.
Retailers don't have to take part in the scheme, so if you want to claim back GST you should check that the store is participating.
Am I eligible to claim a GST refund?
To be eligible for a refund, you must:
- be a visitor to Jersey
- buy goods totalling in excess of £300 in a single transaction, with a single retailer
- leave Jersey, with the goods, within one month of the date of purchase
- leave Jersey on a scheduled flight operated by a commercial airline or scheduled ferry operated by a commercial shipping line (you cannot claim a GST refund if you leave by private boat or private aircraft because the administration is not available)
- have your goods, invoice, and refund form
If the items are in your hold luggage
At Jersey Airport, before you check in the goods, go to the oversized luggage desk in the departures hall with the goods.
At the harbour, ask for the supervisor at the security point.
If you are carrying the items as hand luggage
At Jersey Airport go to the passenger services and security desk after security control.
At the harbour, ask for the supervisor at the security point.
If you don't leave Jersey, you must return your claim documents to the administration desk for cancellation.
How 'visitor' is defined under the scheme
To be a visitor to Jersey, you must:
- not have spent more than 365 days in Jersey in the 24 months immediately before the date of purchase
- not be a resident of Jersey
- not have been employed in Jersey at any time in the past six months immediately before the date of purchase
- be over the age of 16 at the time of purchase
- not be a member of the flight or cabin crew of the aircraft on which you are leaving Jersey
What information do I give to the retailer when I buy my goods?
You must give the following information to the retailer:
- your passport or a form of identification
- details of your arrival and departure flights and dates
- your name and address
How to claim a refund
Once you are back in your country of residence, and within two months of your departure date from Jersey, you should return the retailer's copy of the stamped form to the retailer.
After receiving your form, the retailer must process your refund within three months of your departure date.
The retailer may charge an administration fee to process your form, but they should tell you this when you buy your goods.
If you have a question about your refund, contact the retailer. If the retailer doesn't resolve it, contact the GST helpdesk.
Note: Jersey is outside of the EU for VAT purposes. You should find out about any potential requirements to make a declaration on the import of your goods when arriving at your final destination.
