Ship sanitation exemption certificates
As well as inspecting imported food, officers also enforce the Public Health (Ships) and (Aircraft) (Jersey) Orders, and inspect vessels to ensure compliance with international health regulations. This includes the issue of ‘ship sanitation exemption certificates’ upon request. These certificates mean that the vessel meets sanitary standards, and they must be renewed every 6 months.
Inspection results
Food may be detained, destroyed, or sent back to the exporter if:
- it is unfit for human consumption
- it is labelled incorrectly
- the associated paperwork is incorrect
Traceability / point of origin
Managers and proprietors of food businesses must be able to demonstrate traceability for any food product they receive from a supplier. This includes durability dating (use by) and manufacturer name and address and country of origin etc.
