Statement of significance
This mid 19th century gateway has a great heritage value as an entrance feature to an important St. Helier facility. Its style is a fine example of Victorian public architecture which remains substantially unaltered.
Context
One of several entrances to Beresford fish market and is in close proximity to the main Market on the corner of Beresford Street and Halkett Place.
External Description
Pediment over Venetian opening. Ashlar granite. Projecting pediment and cornice on square brackets with 3 lion plaque in tympanum. Simple flat frame surround to whole bay with moulded architrave to arched doorway, with prominent keystone, and adjacent windows. Windows 40 pane metal frame, metal boxing from cill to ground with 3 lion decoration. Original iron gates with spear tops, modern infill grill and arched infill panel over. Stone masons mark. B - M to E base.
