Statement of significance
A high quality set-piece composition in the Victorian Gothic style, with a good survival of features that make up its character.
Context
A terrace of 3 houses.
External Description
2 storey + attic + basement terrace of 3 houses made up of 3 bays, set back from the road composed of 2 protruding bays with the gable ends of a mansard roof, 3 set back bays between them incorporating 2 doors, further set back bay to the north with the 3rd door. Front (west) elevation: Hipped mansard roof with scalloped slates. Stone chimneys. Pitched roof dormer to central bay with fretted bargeboard and fretwork balcony. Swecked stonework with intermittent ashlar and rusticated quoins, ashlar window and door surrounds, incorporating uprights. 2 roundels at first floor level (one portraying a phoenix, the other a loving pair of phoenixes). Attic windows are 2 pane (1/1) windows with pointed heads. Timber doors with vertical panels, the side 2 glazed and single pane overlight. 2 pane (1/1) sash windows above the doors. On gable ends 2 storey timber balcony, enclosed on first floor and decorated in fretwork. Casement windows with X shaped glazing bars on the first floor windows. Timber veranda along length of set back bay with slender timber columns and elaborate fretwork detailing, fretwork balcony rail. Oriel window above it with fretwork detail and mono-pitch roof. French windows onto veranda. Steps up to each door with fretwork handrails. Low stone boundary wall with timber fretwork fencing and gates.
