Listed building or place reference: HE0129 Historic site reference Property 27 Road name Esplanade Parish St. Helier LocationView on map Grade Listed Building Grade 3 Category Industrial building Statement of significance Although altered, the building is of interest as an example of a Victorian merchant's store / warehouse - a memorable reminder of the Esplanade's commercial history and the hey-day of potato exports. Warehouses such as this were once characteristic of the wider waterfront area of St Helier, but their functional redundancy and large scale replacement and conversion has given the survivors rarity value and greater significance. Context n/a External Description Former warehouse - originally a pair of store buildings of similar size and dimensions flanking a central vehicular throughway. Retained is part of the original east store (no.27), with a reconstructed west store frontage (no.28), expressing the historic form. The south gable end of no.27 is 3 bay, 2 storey with attic, fronting the Esplanade. It simulates a low triangular pediment, behind which is a pitched slate roof. The walling is constructed of rubble granite. At ground floor is a wide central entrance in dressed stonework - all other openings edged with patterned red brick - above which is a former loading door opening; both flanked by a pair of windows. At attic level is a single loading door opening. Modern window fittings throughout. The west wall was designed in patterned red brick with window openings facing the throughway; the party wall to the east of un-coursed granite rubble. Internal Description Part of the original timber-frame warehouse interior is retained.
