Striking and original landmark shop premises at a key focal point in the heart of the historic town centre. Unusual Ruskinian Gothic / Italianate detailing including highly elaborate decorative stonework and tiling. Context Forms strong group with No 8 adjacent and shops on both sides of Halkett Place and Queen Street. External Description Landmark building at the junction of Queen Street and Halkett Place. Late C19 shop. Italianate/Ruskinian gothic style with exuberant decoration. 3 storeys plus attic, 4 bays on Queen Street frontage, 2 further bays round corner in Halkett Place. Fishscale slate roof. Lined render, granite window details. C19 style shopfront with deep fascia. First floor has paired windows divided by central column with capitals with foliate and grotesque mask decoration. Rusticated render banded with vermiculated render. Continuous hood mould over windows includes decorative stonework pattern and tiling. Second floor windows have similar continuous tiled cambered hood mould with keystoned heads. Semi-circular headed dormers with richly decorated surrounds. Granite chip decoration. Pierced roundel parapet between dormers. 3:3:4:3:3 arrangement of attic windows. Heavy curving eaves cornice. Internal Description The interiors at first, second and third floors are relatively complete, albeit with many original fixtures and fittings currently covered. The substantially modernised jewellery workshop room and kitchen on the first floor, and the completely modernised basement and ground floor shop interiors are not of interest.
