About the Access to Justice Review

​​​​Access to ​Justice Review

The Ch​ief Minister's Department is undertaking a review of Access to Justice in Jersey. This will include a review of the Island's legal aid system.

The Chief Minister will be assisted by an Advisory Panel chaired by Senator Paul Routier MBE and supported by an Expert Group chaired by the Chief Minister's Department.

The review will result in an interim report being submitted to the Chief Minister within six months of the work commencing.

A final report will be presented to the Chief Minister within 12 months of the interim report.

​What the review aims t​​o achieve

The review aims to:

  • ​undertake a review of Access to Justice in Jersey, including a review of legal aid, and examine the scope for alternative approaches. 

  • make proposals for improving Access to Justice, including the resolution of disputes and issues regarding legal services, while delivering value for money in the use of public funds.

  • consider any suggestions made to improve Access to Justice in terms of the effect upon the users of legal services, public funds, the legal profession and the tradition of honorary service in Jersey.

Description of the​​ legal aid system

The terms of reference for the review include a requirement to provide a comprehensive and factual description of the current legal aid scheme. This description has been prepared with the assistance of the Law Society of Jersey and the Judicial Greffe.
