Nicotine replacement therapies
Improve your chances of quitting successfully with stop smoking medication.
Nicotine replacement therapy replaces the nicotine your body craves without the toxic chemicals you get in cigarettes like cyanide or carbon monoxide, so it doesn't affect lung function or case cancer.
The following nicotine replacement therapy is available free of charge from Help2Quit. We will only supply these free treatments for people attending support sessions
- patches
- gum
- lozenges
- inhalator
- nasal and mouth spray
Nicotine replacement patches
Nicotine replacement patches are available in three strengths which deliver nicotine throughout the day to reduce the discomfort from cravings and withdrawal symptoms.
Nicotine replacement gum
Nicotine gum is available in two strengths and you chew a piece to help control cravings whenever there is an urge to smoke.
Nicotine lozenges
Nicotine lozenges may suit you if you dislike chewing gum. They are sucked slowly and dissolve in the mouth in 20 to 30 minutes.
Nicotine inhalator
The nicotine inhalator is useful for people who miss the hand to mouth action of smoking. Puffing on the inhalator releases nicotine vapour which is absorbed in the mouth or throat.
Nicotine nasal spray
Nicotine nasal spray is useful for heavily dependent smokers as it quickly delivers nicotine via the lining of the nose.
Nicotine mouth spray
The nicotine mouth spray is absorbed quickly through the lining of the mouth to relieve urges to smoke.
For best results remember to check the instructions, or talk to a health professional or Help2Quit adviser about the best ways to use these various products.
Nicotine replacement therapy safety
NRT products are designed to help you beat your physical addiction to nicotine. NRT does not contain tar, poisons or carbon monoxide like cigarettes do so it does not cause cancer. It is absorbed into your body in a different way to the nicotine from cigarettes and it is much less addictive.
NRT is suitable for most adults but if any of the following apply to you, you should check with your GP first:
- heart condition
- circulatory problems
- pregnancy
- on regular medication
