A survey has been launched to gauge islanders’ awareness of, and receptiveness to, ideas which could become part of Jersey’s Sustainable Transport Strategy.
The short online survey will run until 20 October, with questions designed to determine how the public feel about necessary changes to the use of petrol- and diesel-driven vehicles, and ways to encourage walking, cycling and bus travel.
In May 2019 the States of Jersey declared a climate emergency and agreed to aim for Jersey’s being carbon neutral by 2030. In July, it was agreed that the Government of Jersey would produce the new Sustainable Transport Strategy to provide a vision for future transport should look like. This vision will include measures to increase active travel and will consider issues such as congestion, parking and equal access, as well as the role of new technologies.
The Minister for Infrastructure, Deputy Kevin Lewis, said: “With more than 50% of Jersey's greenhouse gas emissions coming from transport, and 32% from road transport alone, a reduction in our reliance on petrol and diesel car use will have a major role to play in our response to the climate emergency.
“We want to find out what the public feel about possible long-term changes, which will be absolutely necessary if we are to meet our target of being carbon neutral by 2030.
“To help inform this strategy we want to understand islanders’ views on some of the big issues around transport and what they would like to see change over the next ten years. This snapshot survey will help us identify priority areas for further work and public engagement in 2020.”
The Sustainable Transport Strategy will give direction to new policy positions that will help drive an increase in sustainable travel behaviour and will set out the role that transport has to play in tackling the climate emergency.
Islanders can complete the survey:
- Online, by going to gov.je/consultations
- By phone, by calling Customer and Local Services on 01534 444444 who will collect responses
- In person, by visiting Customer and Local Services at La Motte Street, where hosts will collect responses
- In writing, by obtaining a paper copy at any parish hall and then posting it back to: Sustainable Transport Survey, Environmental Policy, Strategic Policy, Performance and Population, 19-21 Broad Street, St Helier, JE2 3RR
Completed surveys must be received before Monday, 21 October 2019.
