Statement of significance
Built as late 19th century Parish Hall. Its ornamentation arises largely from the decorative use of various types and finishes of stone. Survives with many original exterior and interior features.
Context
Former parish hall at heart of village with parish church.
External Description
Single storey, 3 bay, pitched slate roof, cruciform cresting. Front (south) elevation: rock-faced coursed dark grey granite, pale pink dressed granite to quoins, window and porch, large single lintels and sills; door in porch to west bay: pitched slate roof, cresting, replacement timber doors, gable with name stone in relief "Salle Paroissiale", coping highlighted in pink granite on corbels, steps up to door; 3 groups of triple light windows, pvc in stone mullions. Modern single storey entrance hall extension to east with present entrance, grey granite, pink granite dressings, flat roof. Side (west) elevation: long and short quoins in pink dressed granite, also gable coping with corbels; triple light central window, overlights in gable, pvc windows in stone mullions. Rear (north) elevation: smaller cross wing (former parish constable's office) to west bay, pitched slate roof, cresting, granite coping to gable; twin light window similar to others, timber frames; to east of this at rear a selection of later extensions. To roadside low granite rubble wall, chamfered dressed granite coping, low iron railings.
Internal Description
Open hall with parish office to rear west in cross wing. Entrance originally from porch in west bay of south front, now fire exit. Roof partly covered to leave lower ends of roof trusses exposed, supported by granite corbels. Modern mezzanine floor at west end with access staircase next to original door from porch (now used as fire door). Late C20 entrance to hall at east end via modern extension with WCs. Access to rear cross wing and modern extensions from hall via doorway at west end of north wall leading into modern corridor. Parish constable's office remains a single height room off the rear extensions.
